Spanish

Subject co-ordinator: Mrs Ochoa-Gomez

Intent

Our intent is to ensure that all of our children have the opportunity of experiencing a new culture and language without the need to travel abroad in order to promote understanding and respect for others, as well as themselves.

Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world after Chinese and English. Therefore, we believe that learning it in KS2 gives children an advantage for the future. At St Polycarp’s, Spanish is taught by a native specialist teacher. All children in Key Stage 2 are taught a half an hour lesson each week using a combination of games, songs and fun activities aimed at developing vocabulary for written and spoken Spanish. In addition to making the lessons fun and engaging, the focus on grammar supports students with English as well as Spanish.

Resources

In Spanish we use different resources from various providers including the ones the teacher creates. St Polycarp's has an annual subscription with Linguascope and another software that is proving very successful is Duolingo.

Both of them will allow the children to carry on with the learning of Spanish at home.

Challenge

All children are challenged and inspired through our curriculum, but at St Polycarp's we also have some students with Spanish or South American parents or with different nationalities with a special skill at languages. We support them with extra resources during the lessons or at home tailored to their needs.
